Ygraine is the young wife of Gorlois of Cornwall and the mother of  Elaine, Morgan le Fay and Margause who were young girls when Uther became High King of Britain.  It is supposed that she is the second wife of Gorlois as he has a son Cawdor or Cador who is a youth at the time.
Uther falls in love with Ygraine at the celebration of his becoming High King and determined to have her, he pursues Gorlois and his family to Tintagel where he lays siege to the fortress.  Unable to gain entry, Uther has Merlin alter his appearance so that he resembles Gorlois and Ygraine receives him as her husband even as the true Duke of Cornwall is dying at nearby Dimiloc.  The result of this union was Arthur whom Merlin took away to be raised in safety elsewhere.
Ygraine fades from the legends although there are hints that she and Uther did have daughters after Arthur. After Uther's death and Arthur's ascension, Ygraine retired to a palace she had built for herself known as the Chastel des Merveilles or "Castle of Wonders".
