The site of the castle in Cornwall where Arthur was conceived. Legends have it that Uther, who became King after his brother Ambrosius or Vortigern died, fell in love with Ygraine, the wife of Gorlois the Duke of Cornwall and the mother of Morgan le Fay, Margause and perhaps one other daughter.  Gorlois retreated to Tintagel but by using Merlin's magic, Uther was able to invade the castle disguised as Gorlois.
The present castle, a Norman structure, does not date back to the Arthurian period, but the site of a Celtic monastery lies adjacent on an island connected by a causeway to the mainland. This may well have been extant in Arthur's time. Recent archaeological discoveries indicate that Tintagel was indeed the home of someone extremely wealthy and powerful and a slate in nearby abandoned monks caves bore the name "Arcturius".
