Several areas have been said to be the site of the final battle Arthur
fought against the forces of Mordred, however this area not only has the
name, Camel River, but also has the geography that so many of the legends
and stories record. It is also near the so called "Slaughter Bridge"
and Hadrian's Wall, two other sites closely associated with the fall of
Arthur.
The story, though no doubt embroidered on through the years is that
Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table went to fight back a new invasion
of "Saxons" or the Vikings from the shores of England. He appointed
Mordred and Guenivere as his regents. After enough a period of time
had passed, they believed he and his forces had been defeated. Mordred
proceeded to either marry or abduct Guenivere -- the stories vary just
as they differ on whether she was willing or not. Just as they had
set about confirming their control of Camelot and, to all appearances,
attempting to continue Arthur's political stance, the High King reappeared.
The two sides withdrew after some initial skirmishes -- but finally
they met in a large meadow alongside a river for Mordred and Arthur to
meet and try to decide what course of action to take as neither one wanted
to battle. Orders were given that there were to be no arms displayed
during the conferences but a man saw an adder, a small venomous snake and
drew
his sword to kill it. The flash of the blade was interpreted by both
sides as the signal to attack, that the truce had been broken.
